France was one of the pioneers of cheap clean hotels, such as Hotel Formule 1, usually located on trading estates or city outskirts. For 20 euros you could stay at a modern hotel with great room facilities. In the morning get a fresh but appetising breafast for 5 euros. Prices have increased since the launch but are still very attractive.  The Accor group have an extensive range of hotels: Sofitel, Novotel, Mercure, Etap through to Thalassa sea & spa! Of course, there are more traditional hotels in the major cities with old world charm, grace, style and superior accommodation.

In the UK we have star ratings for hotels; in France accommodation is graded by “epis”.

Chambre d’Hôte (Bed & Breakfast) accommodation

Chambre d’Hote is essentially bed and breakfast accommodation in a small lodging establishment that offers overnight accommodation and breakfast, but usually does not offer other meals. Typically, bed and breakfasts are private homes with fewer than 10 bedrooms. Such accommodation is available across France and once again there are B&Bs for every budget.

Gites

A gîte is a French holiday home that is available for rent. Gîtes are usually fully furnished and equipped for self-catering. Traditionally, to be called a gîte, the owner must live close by in order to provide help, assistance, and a warm welcome to guests. Gîtes are generally old farmworkers’ cottages or converted farm buildings and barns close to the owners’ home. Some gites can be very basic but in the last few years the standard has improved significantly and quite luxurious “gites” are available with splendid facilities. More information: Gites in France.

Accommodation in Nice

Ah the South of France! In the chic resorts along the Cote d’Azur (French Riviera) on the Mediterranean coast, there is plenty of accommodation in Nice and other resorts but prices can be much higher. For stays in July or August you need to book well in advance. July and August can get fully booked! Fly into Marseille, Toulon or Nice – budget airlines fly here too.
